my withered need. Still the bag bulges

with ruins.

Estrangement

Out back near the grove

Hal hammers nails into the frame,

stipples the wet August afternoon

striking metal into woody flesh

that yields, accepts the thunder.

As in the pounding months

when cancer smashed his dad’s life,

he seals his sorrow for the son who left,

measures and saws the two-by-fours,

bolts them in and paints them.

The one who stayed helps him

build this windowless shed –
